JUST ADDEDTrevor O'Donnell, arts marketing guru and author, “Marketing the Arts to Death: How Lazy Language is Killing Culture”

IF CONTENT IS KING, WHAT’S UP WITH ARTS MARKETING?*

Thursday, September 6, 9:30 a.m. (new time)

Special session at Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art SECCA.org

*$25 event fee for non-EIC attendees: tickets available through the UNCSA Box Office

The arts have done a great job of keeping up with marketing technology, but we’ve done a lousy job of making our promotional messages fresh, relevant and persuasive. In most cases, we’re using up-to-the minute technology to deliver recycled content that was developed long before anyone owned a mobile phone or personal computer. If survival depends on persuading new audiences, we have to dump our old, cliché-ridden, self-centered language and replace it with a new, audience-centered language that’s as smart and attractive as the technology that’ll be taking it to our customers.

In this hands-on session you'll learn how to use the right words and images to persuade younger, more diverse audiences without offending long-time patrons. It's a fun, irreverent critique of the language we speak now, and a practical tool for developing new, effective marketing content for tomorrow's arts audiences.

PERSUADING NEW AUDIENCES

Thursday, September 6, 3:30 p.m. (new time)

At UNCSA Entertainment Innovation Conference

The language of arts marketing was developed decades ago for people who are now long gone - yet our industry continues to speak it.  Every "Celebrate!" or "Experience the Magic" or "All the world's a stage" is a woefully unoriginal reminder that, rather than communicating, we're just recycling hoary old clichés. With audiences in steady decline, the next generation of arts administrators can’t afford to simply spray clichés at the world and hope for the best. If we expect to attract new audiences we’re going to need a fresh, relevant, persuasive language that explains why audiences should come.

Join Trevor O’Donnell, author of the book “Marketing the Arts to Death: How Lazy Language is Killing Culture,” for a fun, irreverent look at the loopy language of arts marketing, and some useful advice on developing fresh, effective promotional content for tomorrow's audiences.
